REQUIEM, K. 626 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) No. 4 Rex tremendae Mozart&"Requiem" was the first major work of the final program for the 2010-2011 Music & Arts at Providence Concert Series, on June 12, 2011, entitled "From Darkness Into Light." The performance also included "The 142nd Psalm" by Julius Chajes, Rutter&"Requiem," and Russian liturgical anthem "O Gladsome Light" by Alexandre Gretchaninoff, exploring the progression from spiritual darkness and despair through the grieving process of death toward the hope and joy of heaven in God&light and presence. It is one of the most powerful examples of minimal forces producing maximum result. There are no woodwinds except basset horns (alto clarinet) and bassoons -- no flutes, oboes or horns -- with only a pair of trumpets and trio of trombones for brass, timpani the only percussion, organ, and the traditional complement of strings completing the orchestration. And then in Movement 4 the Great Judge of all the Universe appears as "Rex tremendae majestatis" (King of terrifying majesty) and Mozart&music is at once truly...
