Mazda Tribute / Ford Escape 2002 4-cyl starter ( & clutch bolts ) 0:01 Removal 14:15 Reinstallation 20:45 Check clutch bolts (NOT part of normal starter repair) See companion video for starter dismantling I've included the clutch bolt check because this is, to my surprise, possible on this motor. I did it because the starter problems were caused by a stray clutch locating dowel. In the event, all bolts were correctly torqued up. This is not the easiest-to-see video, most of the stuff is out of sight or hidden by a clutter of pipes & wires. It's often much easier to do it by feel than to see what's happening. Removal: Remove battery & tray, air filter & inlet pipe. Undo all connections & anchor clips on main cable battery - control box - starter - alternator & loosen cable Undo 3 starter fixing bolts Under car: Remove steady bracket for RH drive shaft Pull starter down enough to access & undo connections from main cable, & remove starter Reinstallation: Screw a dowel (headless bolt with screwdriver slot) into starter centre bolt hole Under car: Lift starter half way into place, connect up to main cable (1 bolt-on, 1 push-on terminal) Fit starter fully into place From above: Install two starter bolts, remove dowel & install third bolt Reconnect main cable to alternator, control box, & other connections and anchor clips Under car: Refit bracket for RH driveshaft bearing From above: Reinstall air filter & pipe, battery & tray
