After manufacturing precision mechanical instruments at first, the company began producing optical devices at the beginning of the 20th century. After several mergers from the late 1980s, the production facility in Aarau was closed in 1991. The Kern Armee-Modell (Army Model) binoculars, which were mainly produced for the Swiss army, are particularly well-known and widespread. But Kern also produced civilian binoculars. The Pizar was manufactured in the 1950s/1960s and was available in 6x24 and 8x30. The first version of the Pizar 6x24 did not have an anti-reflective coating on the lenses. Such was then introduced with the later models which had the «AR» (Anti-Reflection) mark on them. A promotional brochure from that time describes the Pizar 6x24 as follows: «The Pizar is a quality glass with excellent image quality, but slightly smaller field of view. Its main advantage is the combination of a first-class proven design with a low price. The Pizar also makes it possible for the smaller purse to obtain a first-class prismatic binocular.
