Expedition RAY HERO: Science on the High Seas The RAY HERO project is a scientific expedition aboard a solar‑powered vessel, exploring uncharted waterways and documenting freshwater biodiversity in remote regions. It combines cutting‑edge technology with field science to map and understand vital ecosystems in real time. The Vision RAY HERO aims to: map unrecorded river systems and coastal zones; study freshwater biodiversity (especially endemic and endangered species); monitor water quality (pH, temperature, oxygen, pollutants, microplastics); document human impact on remote ecosystems; create open‑source interactive maps (terrain + biology + solar exposure); engage the public with environmental science through storytelling and sound. The Vessel: RAY HERO A custom‑built solar‑hybrid vessel with: retractable high‑efficiency solar panels; lithium‑ion batteries with backup capacity; electric drive train with redundant systems; navigation suite (sonar, compass, GPS); compact wet lab for water analysis; satellite communication; quarters for a four‑person crew. Design ethos: «If it breaks, we fix it. If it’s not broken, we improve it». The Crew 1. Captain Elias Thorne (call sign: “Helm”) 42 years, Norwegian (Tromsø). Former naval officer with 15 years of polar/coastal navigation experience. Ensures safe passage, crew welfare, and mission coordination. Calm under pressure, natural leader. 2. Leo Vasquez, Mechanic (call sign: “Wrench”) Maintains solar systems...
