If you are just getting started, I’d recommend sticking with a simple downstrum once per chord. After learning a few songs, having some fun, and gaining confidence, feel free to expand from there, but there’s no need to go overboard. To this day, I stick with just three simple strum patterns that create enough variety to avoid sounding monotonous: 1. Downstrum Strum Pattern (↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ). I use this strum pattern for the mellower parts of songs. It can be done at a low-intensity with one strum per chord/measure (↓ ), at a medium-intensity with two strums per measure (↓ ↓ ), or at a high-intensity with four strums per measure (↓ ↓ ↓ ↓ ). 2. Upstrum Strum Pattern ( ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑). I use this strum pattern for happy, carefree songs that remind me of reggae like any song from Bob Marley. 3. Upbeat Strum Pattern (↓ ↓↑ ↑↓↑).
