Download your free Gypsy Jazz Crash Course here: and check out my Gypsy Jazz Songbook Series here: Playing 2-5-1 progressions in Gypsy Jazz This is hands down the most popular and useful progression to learn in jazz and gypsy jazz. A 2-5-1 progression can be found in practically every tune in the repertoire so it's really vital to have this progression memorized in every popular key. So a 2-5-1 in C major is Dm7, G7, C and in G major it's Am7, D7, G There are some particular voicings used in gypsy jazz that differ from straight ahead jazz guitar and that give gypsy jazz it's flavour. They also fall nicely under the fingers for when you're playing rhythm. Check out the example in C major where I start with a Dm7. The cool thing about playing a 2-5-1 in C major in gypsy jazz is that once you have that Dm7 fretted you can anchor your 1st finger and slide the other fingers down to make the G7 type chord. It's this G7 'type' chord that gives reeks of gypsy jazz and gives it such character. Django used these kind of voicings which makes it sound so crunchy and cool! There's many more but this will give you some starters to get going. Swing Out! Robin If you have a question about gypsy jazz just zap me a email:
