Our final video from Japan was at a wonderful old school barbershop where I had a relaxing shave & hairstyling using traditional Japanese methods. Zangiri barber shop, located just outside Tokyo, has been open for over 50 years and is owned by a husband and wife team. Inside you&find an eclectic collection of Bavarian inspired art fused with traditional Japanese and vintage collectibles. The shop name is as unique as the interior, taken from Zangiri Atama, (Zangiri Head), the modern men’s hairstyle in which the traditional topknot was cut off during the Meiji Era. Mr. Takahashi is 79 and grew up in a barbering family in a remote mountainous region ⛰️ of Akita Prefecture in northern Japan. The rural populations were dwindling limiting the future opportunities as a barber so he relocated to Tokyo and worked for several years before opening this barbershop in 1971. At the time there was an Akita Prefecture Club in Tokyo where barbers and beauticians could meet and network. This is where Mr. Kakahashi met his wife, Mrs. Toshiko, and they have been in business together ever since 💈❤️ The interior of the shop was originally influenced by Toshiko&family home 🏠 It was a very old thatched roof wooden house full of old things that fascinated Mr Kakahashi. The collections started with old pieces from that family home, then over time changed to European and Japanese artifacts.
