Avalokiteshvara (Sanskrit Avalokiteśvara, "One who sees the cries of the world"; in Tibetan Chenrezig), is the bodhisattva (bodhisattva) who represents the supreme compassion of all Buddhas. A bodhisattva is that creature who is advanced or ready to attain Buddhahood; yet he vows to reach it fully only when no being is any longer in samsara, or in the wheel of incarnations in this world. Compassion being a central virtue of Buddhism, Avalokiteshvara became well known by Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike, and it is common to find inscriptions with his mantra - Om mani padme hum-[1] even in non-Buddhist circles.
