In this video I&making two parts for Ronald Finger&Datsun 280Z. He reached out to me if I can machine some parts for him on the lathe. As always I&always in for a good YouTube collaboration. He sent me the technical drawings with all measurments and I started machining. The shaft is for an ignition distributor upgrade. The most tricky thing is the case hardening on this part. I picked case hardening steel, this steel doesn&contain enough crabon to get hardened, but it has very good abilities to absorb carbon. Having a media with high ammount of carbon together with this steel at high temperatures, will penetrate the carbon into the steel at around 0.1mm per hour. I used crushed charcoal and heated the part for around 5h. This created a layer of 0.5mm on the part with carbon. When hardening this layer gets hard, but the core remains soft for extra strength. The hard layer on this part is needed, because there&a seal running on the bigger diameter. Everything worked out nicely. I hope he likes my parts and the gift. I hope you like my work and enjoy the video.
