It's been 10 years since Kaytranada dropped his debut album 99.9%, record that helped turn his loose, swung, soulful sound into Kaytranada sound. But before that album, before Boiler Room set, before SoundCloud remixes started spreading everywhere, Kaytranada was just shy beatmaker from Saint-Hubert, just outside Montreal, trying to figure out what his own sound could be. This video follows his journey, from growing up around Haitian Kompa, Fazz, Soul and RnB, to discovering FL Studio, Virtual DJ, Madlib, J Dilla, YouTube beat communities, Montreal's Piu Piu scene and remixes that helped introduce him to world. By time 99.9% arrived, Kaytranada had pulled together Hip-Hop, House, Funk, RnB, Soul, Jazz and Brazilian music into something that felt completely his own. In this episode of Behind Record, we look at how Kaytranada went from bedroom beats and SoundCloud uploads to making 99.9%, album that proved he was far more than just remix guy.
