Kai Narezo and Jesus Montoya play through all of the important elements of a sung Alegrías. They cover the Tiri-ti-tran, the letra, coletilla, Bulería de Cádiz and an Estribillo while showing you the guitar chords and where in the compás the letras begin. We should note that this is not the structure of an Alegrías as it would be sung for a performance, but rather a sort of run-down of all of the essential elements a singer would need to know and a guitarist would need to accompany. More on accompanying Cante: In a traditional Alegrías, the vast majority of letras will still follow a very predictable pattern utilizing a simple harmonic accompaniment. The Cantaor/a will most often begin their letras on, or around, beat 1. After singing a single compás opening, the singer will move into a two-compás pattern. In addition to the letra, we must learn the “Tiri-ti-tran” and the coletilla, which are not technically letras, but are sung sections commonly found in Alegrías. These melodies function a bit differently than the standard letra. The coletilla tends to be “tacked on” to the end of the letra. It typically begins on the upbeat to beat 11 in the last compás of the letra, and this upbeat helps to signal that the coletilla melody is about to be sung. While the coletilla begins before the end of the compás, you can think of it as a long pickup to beat 12, which is the first strong beat of the coletilla.
