In early September 2025, several days of bloody unrest broke out in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. 51 people died. The unrest was triggered by rampant corruption among senior politicians. However, there is also speculation in Kathmandu about whether US-funded forces contributed to the unrest. Nepal lies between China and India and therefore has a geopolitically important location. My interview-partner was Yubaraj Chaulagain. He is a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Maoist Center). The party initiated a civil war against the monarchy in 1996. The king abdicated in 2008. He is still alive, however, and wants to return to power. According to Chaulagain, the new Constitution of Nepal, adopted 10 years ago, is a historical success that needs to be protected. New elections are scheduled for March in Nepal. Chaulagain is optimistic that it will be possible to preserve democracy in Nepal.
