At the age of 16, Ovechkin played at the 2002 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, where he scored two hat tricks, one against Switzerland and one against the United States, and an assist. At the age of 17, when he was selected by Russian coach Viktor Tikhonov to play in the &Poji&Cup EuroTour tournament, Ovechkin became the youngest skater ever to play for the Russian national team. In that tournament, he also became the youngest player ever to score for the national team. He also was selected to play at the 2002 IIHF World U18 Championships, in which he amassed 14 goals and 4 assists in 8 games, leading Russia to a silver medal. At the age of 18, Ovechkin was named captain of the junior Russian national team. Russia finished 5th in the tournament. In 2003, the team would go on to win a gold medal in the IIHF WJC. At the age of 19, Ovechkin was named to the Russian national team for the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, making him the youngest player to play in the tournament. Also at 19, Ovechkin was named captain of the junior team in the 2005 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The tournament, was Ovechkin&third and last.
