In a fight billed as “Star Spangled Glory", the newly crowned undefeated WBC Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis takes on former IBF Heavyweight Champion Tony “TNT” Tucker in his first title defense. Both Lewis and Tucker were stellar amateurs before entering the pro ranks. Prefight records; Lewis 22(19-0), Tucker 48(39)-1. In December 1992, Lewis was awarded the WBC Heavyweight Championship after then Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion Riddick Bowe infamously dumped his WBC strap into a trash can during a press conference in an effort to avoid facing Lewis who was his mandatory. For Lewis’ first title defense, he must face the No. 1 ranked WBC contender Tony Tucker. In May 1987, Tucker won the vacant IBF Heavyweight Title via TKO10 over James Buster Douglas. ** Douglas would go on to score the biggest upset in sports history by knocking out Iron Mike Tyson as a 42-1 betting underdog in Japan 3 years later. Not long after winning the IBF Crown, he was immediately ordered to face then undefeated WBA & WBC Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson in a unification bout in August 1987 and put up a valiant effort despite fighting with a broken right hand and lost via UD12.. During training camp, Tucker had injured his right hand in a sparring session against former 2x Cruiserweight world title challenger Eddie Taylor aka “Young Joe Louis”.
