The bassline is quite ‘straight forward’, and it’s a challenge to play this bassline steady and also with ‘ease’. The bpm is 150 which means that you have to ‘work’ to get the right groove. If you listen to this bassline you might think that John Illsley kept playing the same notes on a chord, but he varies very musically. Especially in the different verses. He also uses a lot of ghost notes, and he certainly lays the foundation with his basslines and follows for instance the melody/groove in the Chorus. I play this song on a Fender Jazzbass with roundwound strings. Bass: John Illsley Album: Dire Straits (1978) Composer: Mark Knopfler This video is for educational purpose.
