Coming out of your boat at sea was very dangerous, so paddlers would need to be able to roll every time. The paddle design has seen a long selection process, with traditions passed and refined through generations. Poor paddles may have meant hunger, so it was important to get it right. All these necessities have really shaped the paddle as an important tool, and we find it amazing to connect to that rich history when using a Greenland paddle. The more parts the paddle has, the more points of weakness. Wooden Paddles however tend to have more flex in them, making it kinder on the joints, and can be easily (re)shaped. They’re a bit harder to get sharp, reducing their efficiency. Often red cedar is used because of its lightweight and water-resistant properties. Wood- Single piece or laminated This is personal preference. Laminated paddles can be slightly stronger, either way you want to avoid knots in the wood you’re using for a paddle...
