His late grandfather Pandit Narayana Bhagavather was a court musician in the palaces of Trivancore and Mysore. His brother is a well known violin artist for all India Radio, and his sister plays sitar. Pandit Subramanian learned Hindustani classical Music from Pandit. V.U. Rajurakar, whose style is of the Gwalior gharana. Under the guidance of his teacher, he completed a masters degree in Music from Khairagarh University in 1978. Pandit worked as a music teacher in Bharatya Vidhya Bhavans Public School for seven years from 1977 to 1984. He then joined the Government College of Music and Dance and eventually worked as a lecturer for 20 years from 1984 to 2004. He was asked by our Divine Mother to take up the music faculty in Her prestigious academy Shri P.K.Salve Kala Pratishthan Vaitarna in 2003. As a result he and Ustad Iqbal Khan performed at the Inagural function of the Academy in 2003.
