Dobie Gray, born Lawrence Darrow Brown, (Simonton July 26, 1940 - Nashville, December 6, 2011) was an American soul singer and stage actor from the 1960s and 1970s. Gray was an African American. His grandfather was a minister at a Baptist church, which is how Gray ended up in gospel. When he left for California in the early 1960s, he met Sonny Bono. That led to Gray releasing his first single, "Look at me". The single did hit the charts, but his real breakthrough came in 1965 with the song "The in crowd", which remained on the charts in the US for about three months. Gray also had other talents, including playing in Hollywood theaters. There he became known with the musical "Hair", with which he toured for two and a half years. His most famous hits were "Loving arms" and "Drift away".
