I planned a day trip from Pisa to Siena that took about 90 minutes each way on the train (one connection involved) and cost around 20 Euros for a return journey. I had heard a lot of good things about this city and liked the photographs I’d seen so decided to make it a priority on my trip to Tuscany. Siena is a city that dates back over two thousand years and is packed full of fascinating history and magnificent architecture - much of which has been preserved throughout the centuries. The old city is perched on top of a hill and surrounded by a large defensive wall. I started my day trip to Siena in the old market square. The Piazza del Campo is a remarkable place with a semi circle of restaurants and picturesque buildings all facing the mighty Pubblico Palace - the most recognisable building in all of Siena. It is adjoined to the Tower of Mangia that stands a crazy 87 metres tall and has survived since the 14th century. I bought a ticket and walked up the narrow steps (all 400 of them!) to gain some phenomenal views from the top - it cost 10 Euros and was worth every cent. After that exhilarating experience I spent a bit more time wandering around the historic city of Siena visiting the Porta S. Marco Gate, walking along a scenic road or two with lovely views out towards the Tuscan hills and learning about the history of the city including Roman rule, the booming economy during early mediaeval times and the Spanish take over in the 16th century.
