It was only recently that I found out about this curiosity from the 1980s. In 1985, Sony released the WM W800, their only double cassette walkman. Yes, you could copy one tape to another using this device! So, this must have been a huge seller back in the day, right? Well, not exactly. I discuss the reasons why in the video. This double cassette walkman ran on two AA batteries. It had a spot for a microphone so you could do live recordings. It had Dolby B noise reduction. It did a fairly good job making copies of cassettes. But compared to other walkmans of the day, it was very expensive. It&funny, when I look back to the 80s, pretty much everyone was making dubs of cassettes at home. I remember the "Home Taping Is Killing Music" campaign. It was really quite a big deal at the time! I recall folks would often borrow a cassette from their friends, take it home and make a copy with a dual cassette deck. I have always been a big fan of Sony products. I would love to get my hands on one of these, but as I mention in the video, even on the second hand market, these things don&come cheap. Did you own one of these back in the day? Do you still own a Sony WM W800? What do you think of it? Did it work well? What were its drawbacks? Feel free to leave a comment! If you are into retro or vintage technology, this is the channel for you. Each week I post videos relating to things like cassettes, CDs, walkmen, VCRs, laser disc, reel to reel, home recording, home...
