Hello students! In today’s lesson, we will practise pronouncing some of the English language’s most difficult words. They are what’s known as ‘complex codas’, a term from phonetics. -------MORE FROM JADE JODDLE ------[0:00] Introduction ------[0:24] What Is a Complex Coda? To explain the term simply, a coda refers to the sounds that come after the vowel in a word. If we break down the word ‘text’ as an example, the vowel is /e/. Following the vowel, we have a string of three consonants /kst/. All of these sounds are in the same syllable, in the same word. -----[1:45] Consonant Elision Today’s lesson will focus on words with increased difficulty, for example, words with four sounds in the coda. The reason we started with ‘text’ is that it is a great example of how native speakers usually simplify complex codas. -----[3:00] Complex Coda Examples Examples include: - texts /teksts/ - glimpsed /glɪmpst/ - instincts /ɪnstɪŋkts/ - attempts /ətempts/ - lengths /leŋkθs/ - sixths /sɪksθs/ -----[11:22] Pronounce 'angsts' &is a 5 consonant coda for some speakers only. It is a German origin word, 19th-century borrowing. It means to be in emotional turmoil or pain, e.g ‘He angsts about modern life.’ -----LESSON ROUNDUP Thank you for watching this advanced pronunciation lesson.
