Decide what you channel you want to preserve and which channel you want to compress away. Typically, you would want to preserve a Kick or Vocals, and compress away a Pad. When a sidechain is set up, the audio of the Preserved mix element (kick or vocal) makes the other element “duck” or compress away. The preserved mix element is called the “key.” The Key drives the compressor, which is applied on signal chain you want to duck. 2. Insert an instance of Fab Filter Pro Q 3 on both the channel you wish to preserve/”the key”, and the channel you want “ducked.” 3. Select the channel you want to preserve, (typically Kick/Vocals) in the Mixer, (in our case, the Vocals) 4. then SHIFTCLICK (or rightclick, “Sidechain to this track”), the Send Switch of the channel you want to compress away/sidechain (typically the Pad), 5. then in the instance of Fab Filter Pro Q 3, inserted on the Pad, (or whatever you want compressed away/sidechained), go to FL’s VST Wrapper Settings -- and then the Processing Tab and activate (red button) and set the “Stereo Sidechain” target (in this case the Vocals (or Kick, etc) ). 6. then in Pro Q 3, Create a bell curve of the area you want compressed away on the Pad to make room for the vocal. 7.
