Big Ben Great Bell Clock Tower Elizabeth Tower Located: North End of Palace of Wesminster London Built: 31 May 1859 Height: 96 metres / 315 ft Architect: Augustus Pugin Why BigBen Came to Existence: On the night of 16 Oct 1834 Palace of Westminster was largely destroyed by fire. When the fire was put-off the paraliament has nowhere to meet. After 13 months, in 1835 the Paraliament chose Charles Barry to construct the Parlimaent. Charles Barry turned to Augustus Pugin for the design of the clock tower. The Big Ben was the last design from Augustus Pugin. Clock Details: Both the dail and the clock were designed by Augustus Pugin. Clock dials are made of Iron Hour hand: 9 feet Minnute Hand: 23 feet Clockmaker: Edward John Dent & Frederick Dent Pendulum Details: 13 feet long, weighs 300 kg Major Breakdowns: On 5 August 1976 there was a major breakdown.
