Humping - How to prevent humping using positive methods.

Humping: Sure male dogs hump to mate, but many times dogs will hump out of stress, over arousal, frustration, boredom and for attention. Dogs will hump human legs, stuffed animals, furniture, and other animals/dogs. Many think this is a behavioral problem, but really it seems quite normal dog behavior, which is why I used the term behavioral issue. However, even though most of the time it is normal behavior, that does not mean we want our dogs going around humping strangers, family members, other dogs, or things. It just is not socially acceptable (according to us humans). I personally know that when my puppy would hump he was overly excited or frustrated when learning a new trick. I do not want my dog so over the top that he can&focus on learning the trick and I do not want him frustrated. I want a dog that is calm or in a learning state of mind. One can&learn if they are so anxious about something that they can&think straight. This goes for our dogs as well! Take a look at how much exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction your dog gets. If your dog is bored, lacks exercise, and lacks social interaction with humans or dogs he may learn to get your attention by attention by humping the couch. Watch your dog and know what triggers the humping or what will cause him stress, which could lead to the humping.
