The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a handheld gaming device created and marketed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was initially launched in Japan on December 12, 2004, followed by releases in North America on March 24, 2005, and in PAL regions on September 1, 2005. The PSP served as the first handheld addition to the PlayStation line of consoles, competing directly with Nintendo&DS during the seventh generation of gaming consoles. The development of the PSP was announced during the E3 conference in 2003 and officially unveiled at a Sony press event on May 11, 2004.
