Souvenir de Cirque Renz (Memory of Circus Renz) Gustav Peter (~ 1833 – 1919) The Stuttgart Academic Orchestra Veronika Stoertzenbach, conductor Recorded Live at the Endler Hall, Stellenbosch, 2014. Programme note: There is little known about Gustav Peter’s life. His most famous work is the “Souvenir de Cirque Renz” for xylophone and orchestra. It was composed at a time when fast dancing resembling a gallop – originally used in light music – was popular. In this period the xylophone was rediscovered and the “Zirkus Renz” enjoyed a great degree of esteem in Berlin.
