Router-on-a-stick is a term frequently used to describe a setup that consists of a router and switch connected using one Ethernet link that configured as a trunk link. And in this setup, the switch is configured with multiple VLANs and the router performs all routing between the different VLANs. This type of routing is commonly known as inter-VLAN routing, which is about the routing within your network between VLANS. For example, you need to place your servers in a separate network or VLAN and your workstations on another VLAN. You can use one router for each VLAN, or You can use only one router to route between the two VLANS. BUT In case you have a Layer 3 switch, you don&need to use a router on a stick, and you can configure your layer3 switch to route between the exist VLANs. Ref:
