Slow Blues Backing Track in E Minor. 12 bar chord progression: ||: Em | Em | Em | Em | | Am | Am | Em | Em | | Bm | Am | Em | Bm :|| Suggested scales for soloing: E Minor Pentatonic scale: E G A B D E Minor Blues scale: E G A A# B D E Minor 7-tone scale: E F# G A B C D Tips for making your solos more interesting: Target Notes: The phrase "target note" refers to playing a specific chord tone within your solo. In other words, if the band is playing an A minor chord, you would "target" the notes that are found within an Am. This is an especially effective technique when the harmony is changing, (the band is changing chords), and you want to accentuate the change by targeting the notes in the upcoming chord. The target notes for this E Minor Blues track are: Em: E G B Am: A C E Bm: B D F# Syncopation and Rhythmic Variation: Syncopation means using a variety of rhythms to create a feeling of being "off-beat." By using syncopation and rhythmic variation in your solos, you can expand your musical voice without relying solely on notes. Experiment with playing different note values, (quarter, eighth, sixteenth, etc.), or even try compound meter, (playing three notes in the rhythmic space of two, i.e. triplets). Have fun!
