In the early 2000s, Toyota experienced a decline in its sports car offerings, moving away from iconic models such as the Supra, Celica and MR2. However, in 2012, Toyota updated the sports car lineup with the Toyota 86. Fast forward a decade and the Toyota GR86 is the second generation to celebrate its tenth anniversary with a special edition. Powered by a 228-horsepower 2.4-liter inverted four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission, the 2023 GR86 is an excellent choice in the affordable rear-wheel drive sports car segment. Its rivals, such as the Mazda MX-5 and Subaru BRZ twins, are now limited. The GR86 continues the legacy of its predecessor, offering a driving experience reminiscent of the silly rear-wheel drive fun of yesteryear. The steering is crisp and communicative and the suspension strikes a balance between driving pleasure and everyday comfort, albeit with slightly more noise, vibration and harshness than the older model. The car&power output is impressive: the 2.4-liter opposed engine produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, providing engaging driving dynamics and the ability to induce oversteer in corners. Priced at around $28,000 before taxes and options, the Toyota GR86 is a great value sports car. The Premium trim costs more than $32,000, while the 10th Anniversary Special Edition, limited to 860 units, is available for $34,360. Overall, the GR86 maintains its position as an exciting and affordable sports car that continues the legacy...
