In this video, we show how to configure a MOXA MGate MB3170 as a Modbus RTU-Master. Setting up a MOXA MGate as a Modbus RTU-Master means the initial request comes into the serial port and exits from the Ethernet port. Here is a few examples of when a Modbus RTU-Master configuration may be desired. 1. Island Networks 2. Legacy Network Devices 3. TCP/IP Connection Limits from field Devices 4. Cybersecurity Mitigation with older field devices. By connecting Ethernet-based field devices to a Modbus RTU-Master, only Modbus data is passed. This helps organizations save money, avoiding replacing field hardware, or running new serial cabling to devices. Risk Management concerns want to avoid potential threats on the network. As mentioned above, the only data that passes out of the MOXA configure as a Modbus RTU-Master is Mobbus data. No other protocol data is supported on the line. If being used for a Remote Monitoring System, or Industrial Automation, this process helps harden devices, without spending a lot of money.
