Today we are testing the Ram 1500&4WD system off-road in the snow and it failed. I wanted to see if the Ram&front driveshaft was always given power when the truck was in 4WD LOCK. I set up a "real world" 4x4 test and wanted to see what the truck did in different situations. I read online about how the truck can cut off power to the front driveshaft in certain conditions like when the wheels are turned or when there is no throttle input so I wanted to see if I could replicate this. I tied my truck to a solid tree and when through the 4x4 options and found some pretty clear evidence that indeed the 4WD LOCK option does not lock the front driveshaft to the rest of the power train. Ram offers TWO transfer case options: BW44-44 and the BW44-45. if you have the 4WD AUTO option you have the clutch pack style BW44-44 transfer case. this is the weaker of the two and the transfer case my truck has which does not actually lock in the front shaft. the latter is the BW44-45 which is the stronger transfer case with a true mechanical linkage (no clutch pack) to the front driveshaft and actually locks it to the rest of the drivetrain. The Rebel and Outdoorsman models only come with the stronger BW44-45 because it&better and more capable off-road. I go into pretty good depth about both transfer case options in my previous video: Hope you guys liked the video and maybe even learned something!
