The Bessemer process, was the first inexpensive process for the mass production of steel from molten pig iron, before the development of the open hearth furnace. The Bessemer&converter is a cylindrical steel pot approximately 6 meters(20feet) high, originally lined with a siliceous refractory. The key principle of the Bessemer converter is the removal of impurities from the iron, by oxidation with air being blown through the molten iron. The invention in England by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas, of what is now called the Thomas Gilchrist converter. Which was lined with a basic material, overcame the problem of not effectively removing the phosphorus present, in most British and European iron ore by the Bessemer&process.
