After the dissolution of the International brigades, many Yugoslavs moved to France, where they were placed in the camps. 250 Yugoslav volunteers illegally moved from France to Yugoslavia and joined the fight against the invaders during the Second World War. Proof that the experience gained in Spain was valuable is the fact that during the final operations for the liberation of the country, all four generals who led the Yugoslavian army were Spanish soldiers (Koča Popović, Peko Dapčević, Kosta Nađ, Petar Drapšin).
