The Proposal (movie, 2009)

Margaret Tate is used to keeping everything under control: the employees of her publishing house, deadlines, her own reputation, and the career for which she once moved from Canada to New York. But the threat of deportation suddenly destroys her flawless professional order, and the domineering boss finds a desperate way out — she announces that she is marrying her exhausted assistant, Andrew Paxton. For him, the lie becomes a chance to bargain for a promotion and the publication of his own book, while for her it is the only way to remain in the country. To convince immigration officials, they must travel to Andrew’s family in Alaska, where a cold business arrangement collides with noisy relatives, family traditions, awkward situations, and feelings that can no longer be written into a contract. Anne Fletcher’s romantic comedy builds its story on a clash of personalities, where a fake engagement gradually reveals loneliness, the fear of vulnerability, and the possibility of seeing something more in long-standing irritation.
