Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding process invented and patented by the TWI, UK in 1991. Though FSW was primarily developed to weld softer and low melting point metals like aluminum and magnesium, it has now been used for welding almost all grades of aluminum alloys, some steels and also some superalloys. Friction Stir Welding process has been recognized as a revolution in welding technology and as a result it has seen widespread acceptance in the industry. This educational video attempts to describe the process and also its important features using process animation.
