In 2007 collection of his annotated lyrics, Sting, writing about “Why Should I Cry?” shared how the death of his father first crippled his songwriting but eventually inspired The Soul Cages, the album from which this song comes: “My father died in 1989. We’d had a difficult relationship, and his death hit me harder than I’d imagined possible. I felt emotionally and creatively paralysed, isolated, and unable to mourn. I just felt numb and empty, as if the joy had been leached out of my life.” The feelings of loss, reflection, the rise and fall of the “feel” of this song and its allegory with the sea is a beautiful, moving work. Of course, what a songwriter meant by his or her song can mean something else when it speaks to whomever is listening. I think most people feel the loss of someone-loved-in-a-complicated-way when they listen. For me, this week is the irretrievable loss of my father into his final cognitive decline and the heartbreaking choices I had to make to keep him safe while, at the same time, being unable to save him.
