Love on the Road
This is my recreation of John Taylor&bass line to the Duran Duran song "Planet Earth" from Duran Duran&self-titled LP released in 1981. This video is NOT the "night" version. I do not own this music. This video is for educational purposes only. This bass line is a clever mix of disco octaves and sort of a "Steve Harris Gallop", all played with a pick. My understanding is that the tempo was too fast for John to get the effect with his fingers, so he used a pick for this track. Since he was all of 20 years old at the time, I¬ surprised he couldn&do it. Most 20 year old bassists with just a few years of experience aren&going to be able to gallop at MM=132. I&no doubt he could do it today with fingers, but do they even play this song live anymore? I don&know. I love the little bass solo in the middle. It&a hint at what&to come - the bass is upfront and center stage in most of Duran Duran&songs, as John is a hell of a stylist and player. Perhaps it&a little foreshadowing . . .
