There is a learning period, but not too long. Hooking into sapwood is best with a fast, hard hit. However, hooking into heartwood can also work if the round is not too hard, dry or frozen. Definitely avoid twisting the head of the tool! I understand that some people have broken the head by twisting (i.e., moving the handle side ways while hooked into a round). Longer logs can be easily moved, without bending over, by hooking one end; pulling it up; cradling it in one arm; then carrying the weight with the XA22 hooked into the other end — or simply dragged.
