My Cattleya tenebrosa is once again in bloom, with 3 huge flowers. I filmed it everyday since the buds started coming out of the sheath, so I could share with you the development of the flowers. They started to emerge from the sheath on the 12th of July, and were completely open on the 20th of July. This is a tall plant. The longest pseudobulb on my cattleya is 24 cm / 9.5&tall, and the longest leaf is 38 cm / 15&long! So as you can see this is a pretty tall cattleya. The blooms are 20 cm / 8&wide, very mildly fragrant, and have a reddish copper-bronze coloration on the petals and sepals, with a vibrant purple lip. This unifoliate Brazilian cattleya is a summer bloomer, and usually puts out 2 - 4 flowers per sheath. Unfortunately the flowers only last for 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the temperature. During hot summer they only last for 2 weeks. Cattleya tenebrosa is a vigorous and easy-to-grow cattleya. It needs high light, but not quite as much as most other cattleyas. The ideal day temperature is between 68-85 F (20-29 C), and night temperature around 60 F (16 C). It should be given lots of water while it is growing, and allowed to approach dryness between waterings. After flowering it needs a short dry rest, until the new pseudobulb starts to develop.
