Siren: Federal Signal Corporation Thunderbolt 1003 5/6 Port Ratio Distance: 300 Feet Signal: Attack System: Newberry County, South Carolina Testing: South Carolina Statewide Tornado Drill (The county tests the other 10 sirens every Saturday except this one, complaints were made) Activation Policy: Alert for Tornado Watches; Attack for Tornado Warnings Location: College & Main Street; Newberry County Assesor Building Description: This siren has been the loudest siren I have ever recorded, it was even louder than the Sentry 40V2T in Dallas, NC. The weather radio was very static-y, so that is why there is no voice heard, but the alert is barely heard just before the siren wound up. This was very pleasing to the ears, as it echoed greatly, and had the low pitch. It had been drizzling for most of the morning, but that in no way stood against the statewide tornado drill. York is the only county believed to not participate in sounding the sirens during the statewide tornado drill. I polled Laurens, Newberry, Spartanburg, Chester, Union, and Cherokee, and they all chose to activate their siren systems for this event. However, York did not participate. This was the first test that the refurbished Great Falls Thunderbolt 1000 participated in. I also saw that the Richburg T-128 had been activated for it. The downtown Newberry Thunderbolt 1003 is only tested during the Statewide Tornado Drill, so it is only tested once a year. This siren sounds amazing, but is catching up to...
