I recorded in the calm of the morning, this walk follows quiet lanes, open countryside and traditional stone cottages that reflect the timeless character of rural England. There is no talking or music in this walk, just natural sounds, gentle movement in the landscape and the steady rhythm of village life. ABOUT CHARLTON ABBOTS Charlton Abbots is a small village in Gloucestershire, not far from Winchcombe and the Cotswold escarpment. The village has ancient roots and was recorded in early medieval documents, with much of its history shaped by agriculture and the surrounding farmland. The name “Charlton” comes from Old English meaning “the settlement of free peasants,” while “Abbots” reflects its historical connection to monastic ownership in the medieval period. For centuries, the land here supported sheep farming and arable crops, contributing to the wider wool trade that once brought prosperity to the Cotswolds. At the heart of the village is St Mary’s Church, parts of which date back to the Norman period, with later medieval additions. The surrounding cottages and farmhouses are built from traditional Cotswold limestone, many dating back several centuries.
