The M501 connects to the Slovene railways at Središče ob Dravi, extending to Pragersko, while the R201 line branching off in Čakovec serves Varaždin. The line is part of the Pan-European Corridor V. The rail line along the south shore of Lake Balaton was built in 1861 as the Budapest – Székesfehérvár – Nagykanizsa railway. Within the Kingdom of Hungary, it was a main line to Adriatic ports.
