This Melies film is notable for the fact that in it the director invents his new special effect. Here, for the first time in history, what was later called "zoom" is demonstrated – changing the size of an object when the camera is stationary. How could Melies achieve such an effect at the beginning of the twentieth century using extremely primitive equipment? It turns out to be very simple. Instead of a moving lens, the actor himself approached and moved away from the camera, thereby creating the impression of a change in scale.
