HONDA TRISTEZA - Tango with English translation Roberto Firpo c. Principe Azul 16-07-1931 Information on the video notes (Show More) Music: Roberto Firpo Lyrics: Vicente Planells del Campo THE STORY OF HONDA TRISTEZA In 1930, the composer and orchestra leader, Roberto Firpo, abandoned tango. He was at the height of a successful musical career yet he had ambitions to become a cattleman. So, he invested much of the wealth he had earned put it into cattle and he did well but then, floods on the Paraná River destroyed his dream. He turned to the stock market but, in the Great Depression, times were hard and Firpo lost the remnant of his fortune. Thus, he returned to tango with his new composition, Honda Tristeza. With thanks to Zhanna Rabinska. DEEP SADNESS (Recited) And that sadness Permeates my soul On remembering... (Sung) That taking my hands You squeezed me tightly And spoke sadly Words of sorrow. And in your faltering words You made your sad goodbye, And began to sob And from me, took your farewell. English translation by Paul Bottomer © All Rights remain with the owners
