Mauro Giuliani(1781-1829 Italy) M.Giuliani was an italian guitarist and composer who studied the violoncello and violiin before taking up the guitar, quickly becoming a virtuoso. In 1806 Giuliani moved to Vienna without his wife and family and it was there that he became acquainted with the classical instrumental style. Everywhere he went hewas acclaimed for his virtuosity and musical taste, becoming ssomething of a musical celebrity. Giuliani defined a new role for the guitar in the context of European music. He was acquainted with the highest figures of Austrian society and with notable composers such as Rossini and Beethoven, and it is said that he even played the violoncello in the very first performance of Beethoven&first symphony. As a composer he had only minor success but he developed a reputation as a teacher there. In 1819 Giuliani left Vienna and returned to Italy as his property and bank accounts had been confiscated to pay debtors. He settled in Rome with his daughter Emilia who was educated at the nunnery L&del Gesù together with his illegitimate daughter, Maria. From 1823 onwards he lived between Rome and Naples in order to visit his father whose health was failing. During this time he frequently appeared in duo concerti with his daughter,Emilia who had became a skilled performer on the guitar.
