0:54 Army Comps 8:50 Battle Begins It is September, 480BC. One month after the battle of Thermopylae, the large Persian navy, numbering over 1200 ships, was causing insurmountable pressure upon the Greek city states. The Athenians fled to Salamis when Persian forces captured Athens. Now, a collection of ships from several Greek states made ready to hold against the Persian fleet. With roughly 340 ships (and 180 of them Athenian alone), the Greeks decided to make their stand in a small Gulf nearby Salamis. There were a few reasons for this decision. First, they would be able to retreat onto land if the battle went south. And second, the Persian fleet, both large in number and in vessel size, would have great difficulty maneuvering in the tight bay. As the Persian fleet approached, 120 ships from Greece formed a line. Their ships were smaller, lighter, and easier to maneuver. 100 Persian vessels moved into the bay. Should the Greeks lose this battle, the Persians will take control of all Greece.....
