Meadow Brown Butterflies Maniola jurtina insularis

The Meadow Brown Butterfly Maniola jurtina is an abundant grassland species in the UK where it is represented by the subspecies insularis. The butterflies often fly away if disturbed but the pair shown in the later part of this film was quite co-operative. Because their wings are open it is possible to see the differences between the male and female of this sexually dimorphic butterfly.
