The Mercedes-Benz T80 was born in 1937, when the famous German driver Hans Stuck convinced Mercedes-Benz to build an experimental vehicle with which to break the world speed record. Hitler, a racing car enthusiast, supported the project, which was led by Ferdinand Porsche as the visible head of development. The initial objective was to reach 550 km / h, although in 1938 this figure was raised to 600 km / h, after the news that the English George Eyston and John Cobb had exceeded 550 km / h in the Bonneville desert, at aboard the Thunderbolt. When the Mercedes T80 was ready, the limit was set at no less than 750 km / h.
