Vostok 1 was the first crewed spaceflight in human history, launched by the Soviet Union on April 12, 1961. The mission was commanded by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who became the first human being to travel into space. The Vostok 1 spacecraft was a spherical capsule that was launched atop a modified R-7 rocket. The spacecraft was equipped with life support systems, as well as instruments to monitor Gagarin&vital signs and the performance of the spacecraft during the mission. During the mission, Gagarin orbited the Earth once, reaching an altitude of approximately 200 miles and traveling at a maximum speed of over 17,000 miles per hour. The flight lasted just under two hours, with Gagarin returning safely to Earth by ejecting from the spacecraft at an altitude of approximately 23,000 feet and parachuting to the ground. The success of the Vostok 1 mission was a major milestone in human spaceflight, demonstrating the viability of crewed spaceflight and opening the door to further exploration of the cosmos. It also sparked a space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, with each nation vying for supremacy in space exploration.
