The device which is called Doppelfernrohr (DF) 7x40 was designed to be carried without a case and was therefore equipped with rubber armour. The reticle can be illuminated with an accessory unit. It was introduced in 1968 and later replaced by a successor which has a different ocular design and added rubber armour (similar to the ZRAK 7x40).
